The trap of having to strip away guardrails isn’t an accident of competition; it’s being maintained by the government through incentives.

When researchers founded Anthropic in 2021, they said the race to build powerful AI was moving too recklessly. They inserted detailed safety measures into their products and marketed their commitment to safety as the corporate quality that distinguished them from competitors—notably OpenAI, the rival company they had left. In March 2026 that reputation was tested when the Trump administration declared that Anthropic was a supply chain risk.

The efficiency trap

In a culture obsessed with productivity, we rarely ask what we’re sacrificing for speed.

When I became a mother, I closed my office door. Not dramatically—no manifesto, no announcement. I just needed to get more work done in less time, and open doors invite conversations that consume minutes I no longer had. Before my daughter was born, I was a tenure-track business school professor who kept that door ajar as a matter of professional faith. Hallway talk is where ideas happen, where goodwill accumulates, where careers get built. After she arrived, with daycare pickup hardwired into my schedule, I became a practitioner of what I would later hear a research participant describe as “ruthless efficiency.” I had no time to waste. No time to be nice, craft perfect emails, or linger in conversations. I had work to produce and a finite window in which to produce it.

When I was living with an eating disorder as a child, the obsessive thoughts driving how I felt about my body looked a lot like OCD. The anxiety that followed me to the dinner table didn’t go away when I left multiple rounds of treatment; it went dormant and waited. It took years before any clinician helped me see the full picture, and longer before I had the language to name it.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of everyday academic life for America’s students. By mid-2025, up to 84% of high school students were using AI for schoolwork, including writing essays, summarizing readings, and completing assignments. Despite widespread usage, students themselves are growing wary of what this means. A 2026 Gallup–Walton Family Foundation survey found Gen Z’s excitement about AI has dropped 14% since 2025, and nearly half of working Gen Zers now believe AI’s risks in the workforce outweigh its benefits.

In May, employers added 172,000 jobs—stronger than projected job growth—and unemployment did not budge from 4.3%. The leisure and hospitality sector led much of that growth, adding 70,000 jobs, while industries like healthcare have also continued hiring in significant numbers.
